At OLOR the aim of English in Years K–6 is to enable students to understand and use language effectively, appreciate, reflect on and enjoy the English language and to make meaning in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive, critical and powerful.
Becoming literate is the right of every student, it gives hope for success for the future and is the key to life-long learning.
Our work in the area of English is based upon the following principles through which our children will develop and refine their abilities when speaking and listening, reading and viewing, writing and representing, with purpose, effect and confidence for a wide range of audiences and purposes.
A daily literacy block is used for the explicit teaching and learning of English throughout the school. During this time students engage in a variety of teaching and learning activities which enable them to develop their knowledge and skills across the domains of speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing.
The literacy skills developed through the explicit teaching of English play a central role in all learning and are, therefore, integral to teaching of all Key Learning Areas.
